The external costs of pasture weed spread: an economic assessment of serrated tussock control

چکیده
The external cost associated with the spread of pasture weeds such as serrated tussock (Nassella trichotoma) is an important economic problem. This problem is complicated in many parts of south-eastern Australia where low rainfall and low soil fertility prevent the economic viability of control of this weed through pasture improvement. A consequence of serrated tussock spread in this region has been calls for increased public intervention in its control. However, because there have been no attempts to measure the external costs of serrated tussock spread, one of the major economic grounds on which this activity might be justified has not been quantified. The purpose of this paper is to provide this information. A stochastic simulation model is developed to determine the size of the external cost associated with the spread of serrated tussock and to evaluate the economic benefits of a range of control scenarios. It is concluded that on low rainfall-low soil fertility country the socially optimal control option for serrated tussock is to retire land from agriculture and re-vegetate it with trees. ©2000 Elsevier Science B.V. The behavior of multiple independent managers and ecological traits interact to determine prevalence of weeds.
Management of damaging invasive plants is often undertaken by multiple decision makers, each managing only a small part of the invader's population. As weeds can move between properties and re-infest eradicated sites from unmanaged sources, the dynamics of multiple decision makers plays a significant role in weed prevalence and invasion risk at the landscape scale. We used a spatially explicit ...

The vegetation of 10 quadrats from each of 26 sites, in and around the Tongariro National Park, which contained the introduced dwarf shrub, Calluna vulgaris (L.) Hull, was analysed using Reciprocal Averaging and Indicator Species Analysis. Six major plant communities were recognised and related to previous mapping units: tussockland with shrubs and herbs (red tussock tussockland); heathland wit...

Despite 120 years of rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus L.) control in New Zealand, there is a surprising dearth of quantitative information on the damage rabbits cause to agricultural systems and the environment. Research and debate on rabbits have traditionally centred on the various technical options available for their control, and their cost efficiency. Little attention has been paid to the env...
متن کامل‘Weeding’ out high weed risk species from pasture breeding programs: introducing an environmental weed risk management process into the CRC for Plant-Based Management of Dryland Salinity
Historically, pasture breeders have not considered environmental weed risk in species selection and assessment. Consequently several pasture or former pasture species are now problematic environmental weeds in Australia. The CRC for Plant-Based Management of Dryland Salinity (CRC) has taken a pro-active approach to prevent further introduction or promotion of weedy pasture species by developing...

An evaluation of the economic feasibility of investment in a eucalypt energy plantation must involve an assessment of the costs of the various cultural practices (planting, weed control, irri gation), the costs of processing the standing tree into a usable form (logging costs, transportation costs, chipping, cutting to firewood length) and the returns expected from the sale of the pro cessed ...
